Rimboard – An engineered wood product used in framing

Rimboard is an integral part of any project that uses engineered wood products as the main component of the frame system. Rimboard is the product of choice for covering the ends of engineered i-beams used for construction project floors.

By replacing the edge joist in a conventional frame, the edge board of an engineered wood flooring system provides structural stability and weather protection to wood I-beams. Rimboard is constructed in the same way as OSB (Oriented Strand Board) wood products, using smaller pieces of wood joined with low-emission resins to form a structurally superior, studio wood product. Rimboard is used around the entire perimeter of the floor structure to provide a smooth nailing surface for siding or siding.

The OSB rimboard is made from wood strands that are cross-oriented to provide strength and resistance to cupping, then bonded together using high pressure and heat to form a strong, straight structural member. Rimboard is treated with a waterproof coating to resist the penetration of moisture into the surface. Engineered rimboard is stronger, straighter, and easier to use than dimensional lumber of the same size.

Using rimboard in conjunction with engineered lumber I-beams will save time and expense during the construction project. Rimboard is manufactured to match the exact depth of engineered i-beams, eliminating the need to rip standard dimensional lumber that does not come in sizes that correspond to common engineered lumber. This saves time, money, and waste on the construction site.

When used correctly, the rimboard becomes a structural component of the engineered hardwood floor, transferring vertical and horizontal forces. When attached to the ends of I-beams, the rimboard adds stability to the vertical members to prevent them from twisting or warping.

As with all engineered wood products, rimboard is an environmentally friendly alternative to dimensional lumber construction. Smaller wood strands can be obtained from smaller, fast-growing trees, grown with sustainable forestry techniques, saving old trees. The resins used to bond the rimboard are water-based, so they contain a negligible amount of toxins.

Integrating the rimboard into your framing project using engineered wood products will provide the finishing touch to the framing portion of the project. Saving you time, money and material compared to standard dimension wood edge joists, rimboard is the material of choice. Being more environmentally friendly is just an added bonus when using a hoop board, and we can all feel good about it.
