One of the most exciting moments in college is when you first hear the school fight song at the first football or basketball game. It could even be at the school pep rally, where the band plays and the cheerleaders cheer on the team. No matter where the event was, you will always recognize that song. I’m sure the schools we’ll be talking about feel the same way and you may even know the song and not know the school.
Let’s start with Pennsylvania State University, also known as Penn State. Penn State has been a top institution for years. This institution has a rich history and tradition mainly due to the legendary football program and coach Joe Paterno. I can truly say that this school has not only hundreds of thousands of followers, but also those who have no ties to the school. Joe Sanunders composed “Fight On, State” in 1915 specifically to play after a touchdown. It is played in its entirety, then slows down, stops, and resumes once the extra point is kicked. A shorter version of the song known as “New Fight On, State” was written in 1968 and is played without the slow down part or pause.
Another popular fight song is from the University of Texas. While “The Eyes of Texas” is the best-known song of the University of Texas and is in most of the state’s history books, “Texas Fight” is the official song of the school. “Texas Fight” was written by Walter S. Hunnicutt and James E. King, it is sung to an up-tempo version of Taps, mostly after touchdowns and extra points. Many people don’t remember that this song was meant to be a response to archrival Texas A&M’s “Farmers Fight.”
Now, this school may surprise you, just because we just mentioned them. The Texas A&M Aggies Fight song “Aggie War Hymn!” Texas A&M, which recently severed ties with most of the schools in which it has played track for more than 100 years, has decided to move to the Southeastern Conference. The song was composed by JV Wilson under the title “Goodbye to the University of Texas”. a competition and this song remains to date as the official version of the university.
You’ve heard this song in popular movies like “Rudy!” This song gives off the vibe of royalty or the country’s president walking into a room or event. The is the “Notre Dame Victory March”, from Notre Dame. The song is one of the most recognizable fight songs in the country and was created to rival Michigan’s “The Victors.” The song was written by Michael and John Shea in 1908, but it didn’t debut at Notre Dame sporting events until 1919. Since then, it has become a treasured part of college football.
The song that many people consider the best of all time is “The Victors!” This is the song from the University of Michigan. The song was originally composed in 1898 by Louis Elbel to celebrate Michigan’s first championship. Considering it was written then, it made its first appearance in games until a few years later, but it became an important part of Michigan lore. The song is sung in praise of the smallest victories to the greatest.
