Quran Angelfish Care Tips

Golden Quran Angelfish Pomacanthus semicirculatusbelong to the family PomacanthidaeThis species is endemic to the Indo-Pacific and the Rhea Sea to eastern Samoa. Its geographic range extends from Japan along the entire east coast of Africa to Western Australia and New South Wales. These are reef fish that occupy depths from 3 to 100 feet.

One of the common traits among large angelfish is the dramatic transitional color change between the juvenile and adult phases of their lives. It is simply amazing to see the gradual metamorphosis of a juvenile into its adult color palette. Quran go through three distinctive stages on the way to adulthood. The greek word semicirculat refers to the initial phase of your life. Baby Korans have black bodies with blue and white stripes that expand concentrically forward from the base of their tails. This pattern looks a lot like the middle of the ripples in a calm pond when a pebble is suddenly dropped into it. A baby Quran could easily be mistaken for a juvenile emperor angelfish. A closer examination reveals that the Qur’an has wider and shorter lines. When these fish are about 3 inches long, the semicircular markings slowly straighten in sweep lines. At about five inches long, the fish begins to exhibit a pattern between the blue lines on the tail fin that resembles Arabic script, hence the Quran’s name angelfish. They exhibit a combination of youthful and adult coloration. This marks the conclusion of stage two. At approximately two years of age and between 6 and 7 inches long, this species transforms into its adult color palette. Adults are typically yellowish-green in color with varying amounts of blue or brown spots on their bodies and tail fin. Their heads can be blue or the main color of their body. The gills and fins are outlined in blue. This species is marketed by the aquarium industry under the following names; Quran Angel, Blue Quran Angel, Semicircle Angel, Semicircle Angel, and Semicircle Angel.

These fish will grow to a maximum adult length of 16 inches. Because of their size they will need a large aquarium. A minimum tank size of 135 gallons is recommended. A well-stocked multi-species tank should be considerably larger.

This fish has a semi-aggressive temperament. It can intimidate smaller fish. For the most part, you will ignore other larger species. However, it will show significant territorial behavior towards conspecifics and other angels. It is advisable to keep only one wide angle fish of any species in an aquarium.

Many large angle species carry an expert level of care. The Qur’ans are classified as moderate. A healthy Quran can live from 15 to 20 years.

Korans are omnivores. In the wild, their diet consists of a mixture of corals, algae, sponges, worms, mollusks, and crustaceans. Their eating habits make them unsuitable for a marine reef aquarium. However, they will require a wide variety of live rocks for a fish of their proportions. Having a food source that they are already used to will help in the acclimatization process. You can start training them to recognize aquarium fee as an acceptable food source by mixing increasing amounts with live food offerings, such as brine shrimp. This is the best technique for weaning them from live foods. Be sure to choose a high-quality food product formulated for marine angelfish. Once they have been successfully weaned, their diet can be supplemented with the following; Chopped fresh crustaceans and mollusks for protein, table vegetables such as chopped spinach, zucchini and yellow squash for plant matter, frozen or dried seaweed such as seaweed flakes to ensure a well balanced diet.
