Therefore, we are happy that we have chosen the perfect car seat for our son. It is exactly suitable for the age, size and weight of our precious cargo and they are comfortable and safe.
Most safety advisory bodies and common sense tell us that they should be secured in the rear seats. Also up to 1 year old should also go in a rear-facing child seat. All great tips that need to be followed to ensure our children are transported safely.
However, a major problem is isolation and the inability to communicate or monitor our children and not be dangerously distracted from driving.
If our child is old enough to be placed safely in a forward-facing seat, they can at least talk to the back of our heads. If we place them on the opposite side of the back seat we can catch a glimpse of them and make some eye contact through the rearview mirror.
If they are babies and they are going in the opposite direction to the march, we can only use verbal communication to try to appease or comfort them. All very frustrating and dangerously annoying. So much so that I started looking at what solutions might be available.
Thank God for the Internet! I’ve found that baby car mirrors are available from most reputable baby accessory manufacturers. They just don’t seem to promote them. I have an idea why because it has revolutionized traveling with my children in the car.
For rear-facing car seats, there are mirrors available that have universal attachments that attach the mirror to headrests, armrests, and anything else that you can attach Velcro straps around. They are specifically designed for this purpose and have plastic mirrors that will not break. The fixings are secure so that the unit does not become dangerous in the event of a collision.
For forward-facing car seats, secondary rearview mirrors are available that connect to the primary rearview mirror, windshield, or dashboard. These are set so you can see your child with minimal distraction and they can see you. As with any product there are some better than others and I have seen some where the quality of the plastic mirror is very poor so the image is not clear or distorted.
With the Internet, it is now possible to read customer reviews from home and make a decision based on other people’s experiences. That’s what I did and I will never look back (while driving).
