Bottled Water vs. Tap Water: The Best Source of Good, Safe Water Will Surprise You

First, in the tap vs. bottled water war, let’s take a look at tap water… some experts think it’s not safe to drink.

Well here are the experts, what do you think?

  1. “Every day millions of Americans turn on their taps and get water that exceeds the legal limit for dangerous contaminants.” USA Today-Special Report, “How Safe Is Your Water”?
  2. “The risk of cancer among people who drink chlorinated water is up to 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” US Council on Environmental Quality
  3. “America’s drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” Ralph Nader Research Group
  4. “Herbicides were found in the tap water of 28 of the 29 cities tested.” Environmental Working Group Report, “Herbicides by the Glass”
  5. The Associated Press investigation found a wide variety of drugs in the drinking water of at least 41 million Americans.

This variety of drugs included: antibiotics, sex hormones; pain medications, infections, high cholesterol, asthma, mental illness, heart problems, anxiety, epilepsy, cancer and more.

Okay, so tap water is a good disinfectant that could breed three-eyed roaches.

What about bottled water?

  1. A university study, commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature, concluded that the difference between bottled water and tap water is that “it is distributed in bottles instead of pipes.”
  2. Stephen Kay, as a spokesman for the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), said: “The standards for bottled water in the United States are at least as protective as those for tap water.” (That’s comforting!)
  3. “Bottled water,” which is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, “is not tested as thoroughly or as frequently as tap water,” which is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, said Jon Coifman, a spokesman for the Council for the Defense of Natural Resources.
  4. The same study added that every year 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water. “Toxic chemicals can be released into the environment during bottle manufacturing and disposal,” the study reported.
  5. Most bottled water suppliers that filter the water they sell proudly advertise that they are selling “pure” water. Often this means chemically “pure” water or H2O that has been stripped of its natural minerals. In this state it is an acid with a pH below 7 and some believe it is dangerous if consumed long term because:
  • Every time we consume an acidic substance, our bodies will extract minerals from our teeth and bones to produce bicarbonate to neutralize the acid and,
  • When bodily fluids become more acidic than alkaline, the production of free radicals increases, increasing the risk of cancer.
  • The cheapest bottled water I could find in the store today was priced at $4.82 a gallon, more expensive than gasoline, and all they had to do was bottle it and take it to the stores. Without paying government leases, oil exploration, expensive drilling, shipping to a refinery, refining, etc.
  • What a deal! (for bottled water companies)

We know that tap water is killing us in the long run, and bottled water is not tested as thoroughly as tap water. (The IBWA even allows 25 percent of its members to bottle water straight from the tap.)

    So what can we conclude?

    1. We can conclude that tap water is clearly dangerous to our health and bottled water is “dubious” at best, as it is even less regulated than tap water.
    2. Also, there can be serious health problems associated with drinking chemically pure bottled water, as well as environmental problems with plastic bottles, and it’s expensive.

If bottled water and tap water were our only options, it is clear that we would be the losers in the bottled water vs. tap water war.

Fortunately, bottled and tap water are not the only options and a much better solution is to bottle your own water, in reusable bottles, with the use of home water filtration units.

The important thing to learn is simply which home water filtration systems do the best, most efficient, and most economical job of filtering contaminants without removing healthy minerals.

You can find out for yourself by comparing the performance data sheets of top-rated home water filtration systems. These sheets show all the contaminants the systems are certified to remove and to what extent they are removed.
