California is the largest wine-producing and consuming state in the US The warm Mediterranean climate and diverse geography make this an ideal location for growing grapes. Each year, the state produces millions of gallons of fine-quality table and vintage wines, accounting for about 90% of the nation’s total wine production.
California wine, a signature product of the Golden State, is considered equal to or even better than European wine. The state has a good number of wine producing regions. Napa Valley, located north of the San Francisco Bay, is California’s most coveted wine region. Other popular regions include San Pasqual Valley, Anderson Valley, Temecula, Santa Maria Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Los Carneros, and Edna Valley.
The most widely planted grape in the state is Chardonnay, with more than 96,500 acres. Cabernet Sauvignon -with a total of 74,900 hectares- occupies the second position.
Every year, the wineries and vineyards attract millions of visitors. Most wine lovers visit the cellars during May-August, when the vines appear at their most magnificent. From September to October is the harvest time. Wineries are typically less crowded during the winter months of December and January.
Visitors can enjoy delicious local wines at any of the restaurants or hotels. From carafe wines to premium and ultra-premium wines are available. Some of the best wines can be purchased directly from the cellars. In addition, you can enjoy tasting wines in the cellars and vineyards.
