Fort Bragg, CA: Welcome to the Redwoods and the Pacific

If you live anywhere near the west coast of California, I have a very nice little vacation spot for you to visit. Most people think of places like Los Angeles or San Diego when they think of an ocean retreat on the California coast, but that’s not all. Those places are great destinations, but if you’re looking for a bit of small-town charm, with incredible beauty everywhere, Fort Bragg California is the place to go.

Located midway between San Francisco and Eureka California, Fort Bragg is a small logging and fishing community. He used to go there as a kid to do some salmon or bottom fishing. All these years later, I still love the place so much that I drive 8 hours to come back and visit whenever I can.

If you have the means and time to get up to the Northern California coast, I have to recommend this area if you haven’t been there before. The redwood forest runs through Fort Bragg and continues north through California and Oregon. The old redwood trees are literally giants, and they are appropriately called “The Avenue of the Giants”.

Fishing is also a lot of fun at Fort Bragg. While the seas can be a bit choppy for novices, an experienced angler will keep you more than safe in the Pacific waves as you reel in a 25-pound salmon, if he’s lucky.

Here are some great things to do and see in Fort Bragg:

  • salmon fishing
  • whale watching
  • Trekking
  • Camping
  • Boat tour
  • Diving
  • Ride the Skunk Train

For a small town in Northern California, the Fort Bragg area is simply an amazing place to go. There is a variety of places to eat, whether you are in the mood for seafood or some Italian food, there is something for everyone. About 10 miles south of the city is the city of Mendocino. If you remember “Murder She Wrote” which was a TV series in the 80’s, the show took place there and some stock footage was shot there.

So the next time you’re looking for a good place to go that’s not too expensive and a little quieter than the big city, consider driving up the coast to the spectacular scenery that is Fort Bragg California. You won’t regret going.
