You honestly can’t say definitively which is the best brand, however it would be true to say that a Chattam & Wells mattress is one of the best innerspring mattresses you can buy. It’s easily as good as other high-end brands like Restonic, Jamison, and Stearns and Foster.
You may not have heard of this company before or know much about their products (there aren’t many Chattam & Wells mattress reviews), but once you see and lie on one, you’ll appreciate why they’re so highly regarded.
The company has been in business for many years and has never strayed from its original idea of making the best mattresses money can buy. It doesn’t make mattresses made solely of memory foam, latex, or any other ‘innovative new material’, but sticks to what it knows and does best; the manufacture of magnificent models of internal springs.
That’s not to say that I never use new technologies; Many of their mattresses feature latex and memory foam components, but the heart of every Chattam & Wells mattress is the coils that are used as the foundation.
High-quality innerspring mattresses are made from heavy-gauge coils made of hardened steel. Each Chattam & Wells features a 12 3/4 gauge double-knot offset internal spring unit. Each coil has 6 turns; most other high end brands use 5.
Thick layers of internally tufted cotton are attached to the spring unit with the traditional method of using buttons on each side of the coil. The company does not use this method simply because it is traditional; This technique has proven to stand the test of time and allows for some pre-compression of the spring unit which gives more consistent pressure across the springs.
Depending on the model you choose, these comfort layers will be made from different combinations of cotton, cashmere, latex and viscoelastic. Each mattress comes with the Chattam edge and some more expensive mattresses feature the patented Portrait Frame system. The edge provides more sleeping area, better support and a firm edge to sit on.
Finally, each mattress is encased in a beautiful ticking Belgian damask knit fabric and each collection has its own royal crown pattern. The corners are provided with metal protections and the mattress is ventilated through brass grilles. The embroidered handles have been meticulously sewn so that they do not come off the mattress itself.
It’s very hard to find anything bad to say about a Chattam & Wells mattress. The best way to decide if one is right for you is to read as many mattress reviews as you can. Ideally, you should also go and lie down on one. While you’re at it, you should try other quality inner spring brands like Jamison, Stearns, and Foster. Pay particular attention to the innerspring unit and comfort layers used and what each manufacturer offers in the way of a warranty.
