No molds allowed! A fun Bible object lesson for your children

If you want to gross your kids out, show them some mold that has grown on some food. It’s disgusting! It can also be very damaging to anything it touches. Who would eat moldy bread? Mold and fungus are also known to destroy entire crops. Haggai 2:17 says this: “I have sent blight, mildew, and hail to destroy all that you worked so hard to produce. Yet you refused to return to me, says the Lord.” This verse shows a very serious side of God that our children need to know. God wants us to protect our spiritual lives and not let the bad things in the world destroy our growth in Him. Here’s a fun Bible lesson to teach his children this important truth.

This is what you do:

The object you will use for this lesson will be a piece of fresh bread and a piece of moldy bread. (If you’re not sure how to grow mold on some bread, Google: “How to grow mold on bread” to learn how.) Put each slice of bread on its own plate so the children can see it.

Ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion:

1. What do I have on this plate? (Show fresh piece of bread. Wait for response.) Who would like to try this bread? (Give the children a piece if they want.)

2. What do I have on this plate? (Show the plate with the moldy bread. Wait for responses.) Who would like to try this bread? (Put it in front of the kids. You’ll get a lot of “yucks!”)

3. Why don’t any of you want to eat the moldy bread? (Wait for responses.)

4. Mold destroys bread and makes it useless to eat.

5. Have a child read Haggai 2:17.

6. Say the following: This Bible verse says that God sent hail and mildew to destroy all the crops that people had worked so hard to plant. Why did you do that? Let’s learn a little more about this Bible verse and how it teaches us to live our lives for God. Here are 3 important points about this truth.

Object 1: Did you know that a farmer’s crops can be destroyed by hail, disease and mold? Unfortunately, it is true. Sometimes the damage can be very bad.

Article 2: Your life is like a farm field. Except that the crops in your field are not fruits or vegetables. Your crops are prayer, reading the Bible and going to church. God wants you to take care of your field. Don’t let pride or laziness creep in like a disease and destroy your prayer time. Do not let your hearts grow cold and wrinkled with mold from not caring about God’s Word.

Article 3: The people in our Bible verse started not caring about God and He had to discipline them and show them that it is serious business to follow and love God. Never neglect your spiritual life. Ask God to take care of your field. Let Him teach you how to take care of your life and how to get away from the dangers that want to destroy you.

East 3 Point Bible Objects Lesson for Kids was inspired by my reading of CH Spurgeon’s devotional on Haggai 2:17 from his book Morning and afternoon. You too can be inspired by your favorite Christian authors and create your own 3 point children’s sermon.
