Take a step forward and write a foreword!

There is a lot of confusion regarding the various sections that appear at the beginning of a book. There is the prologue, the preface and the introduction.

Both the preface and the introduction are usually written by the author. However, the prologue is always written by a third party. Too often, I come across authors who write their own foreword (or propose to do so). This is a clear indication that they have used do-it-yourself publishing services, as no true publisher would allow a book to go out into the world with its label containing such a misstep!

The purpose of the foreword is to praise both the book and the author, and it is usually written by a recognized authority in the field. The person who writes the foreword gives the book more credibility because of his experience and her position. Therefore, the foreword is a marketing tool for your book.

A well-chosen person to write your foreword can bring you more publicity and increase sales and readership. Therefore, consider carefully who you will ask to write your foreword. Think about who relates to both your topic and your audience and will draw people to you.

If you are asked to write a foreword for someone, keep these things in mind. While it may be considered an honor to write a foreword, make sure you are truly qualified to accept this opportunity. If not, politely decline and maybe suggest someone else who might be more appropriate. Instead, offer to write a testimonial or endorsement of the book. The author will appreciate your support.
