What is a gypsy skirt?

This skirt is probably the funniest piece of clothing out there. Kick when you walk; it flows in all directions and comes in a variety of materials and colors. It makes a girl feel feminine and they are very comfortable to boot. Women like to look good at all times and this skirt can be the answer to many diseases when it comes to skirts.

Called gypsy skirt because in the past when gypsies were more prominent, ladies used these skirts because they were easy to make and they could move and dance in them. The peasants used them because at that time they were not heard of pants on women and they gave them more mobility.

Sadly, when pants and trousers came out for women, the gypsy skirt went back into the closet, but then in the 1960s they saw a comeback with the hippies, not only for style but also for comfort. Today they are still quite popular and are used for a long time and sometimes you will find some that have different lengths. Again, when women entered the workforce, the skirt was put back in the closet.

Fortunately, fashion evolves and here the gypsy skirt comes out again, many plan to stay this time. Skirts are all the rage right now and will probably be around for quite a few years. They now come in different lengths, colors and materials. Although the most authentic gypsy skirt is made of cotton or, if allowed, hemp. The designs are endless, from solid colors to beautiful, bright patterns.

If one is handy with thread and the sewing machine, one can make them, or many of them, each in different lengths and colors. All you need is a piece of fabric cut in a full circle for free flow, sew some elastic at the waist and a hem at the bottom and you have a fun, flowy skirt. If you are very handy you can embroider some designs, there are even machines that will do it for you.

If you make your own gypsy skirt and the material isn’t too heavy, you can use cord instead of elastic. Some even use these skirts for belly dancing, as they sit nicely on the hips rather than the waist. These skirts are wonderfully stylish for the summer months paired with a peasant blouse and a nice pair of sandals.
