What is DHA used for? More than you realize

The other day my friend asked me what DHA is used for and I found myself going into a long explanation about how DHA is the fatty acid responsible for the development of your brain.

Basically, DHA is an omega 3 fatty acid. Your brain is made up of almost 60% of this fatty acid. And it is used all over the body for many jobs.

Increases the amount of a protein that improves memory and concentration. Studies show that it can protect you from Alzheimer’s and even improve your mood.

It does a lot more too.

Here is a short list of what DHA is used for:

1- Protects you from heart attacks. Western diets are full of fatty and cholesterol deposits that build up in the arteries. This can cause “hardening of the arteries” which essentially narrows the arteries, making it difficult for blood to pass through.

DHA prevents this plaque from building up in the arteries so blood can flow smoothly.

2– Strengthens your eyesight-Your retina contains DHA fatty acids. If you don’t get enough of these omega 3s, your eyes won’t get the nutrients they need and your vision will fail.

3- Delays Aging — A University of California study found that volunteers who consumed enough omega 3s actually slowed their DNA aging compared to participants who didn’t consume the omega 3 fatty acids they needed.

4-Improve your mood-Research shows that DHA can relieve mild depression. Psychologists recommend omega 3 fish oil supplements to more and more patients. Some have even been able to cut down or stop taking antidepressants as a result of taking these supplements and get the nutrients they need.

Basically, DHA is essential. It improves your memory and your cardiovascular system. In addition, it is great for your mood, your eyesight, and it is anti-aging.

The typical western diet is deficient in DHA. Processed foods do not have these omega 3s naturally. You can get them by eating more spinach, olive oil, nuts, and lots of fish.

The American Heart Association recommends eating fish 2-3 times a week to get the DHA you need.

Nutritionists recommend 1-2 mg per day of omega 3 to maintain your health. You can get it by eating more of the above foods or by taking a fish oil supplement. Just make sure you get one that has been molecularly distilled so that it is pure.

These nutrients are so important that they can protect you from an early death. A Harvard study found that a diet deficient in these fatty acids is linked to almost 100,000 premature deaths a year!

Now that you’ve seen what DHA is for, what are you waiting for?
