Will eliminating bad credit improve my credit score?

The fastest and most influential way to improve your low credit score is to remove bad credit from your credit report. You can use two techniques to remove inaccurate, negative, or questionable items from your credit report.

A very easy way to remove bad credit from your credit report is by filing a dispute with the three major credit bureaus which are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. These credit bureaus take around 30 days to process your inquiry and respond to you. In most cases, creditors do not respond to credit bureaus, so in such a case, negative items are automatically removed from your credit report.

Another method of dealing with bad credit is to deal with your creditor yourself. This could include discussing a payment plan or even writing payment as paid as agreed or paid status with the credit bureaus. This method may work better for you if the debt is less than 180 days past due. If the debt is more than 180 days past due, the creditor may have sold your debt to a collection agency and therefore has no reason to negotiate with them.

If you have an agreement to pay a portion of the full amount as payment in full, make sure that any agreement you make must be in writing and signed by both parties. If you are currently preceding the collection SOL and live in a state that allows the collection SOL to be rearranged based on your paper settlement to pay, you could sue for the outstanding lot.

In the event that it is the former legal collection SOL in your state, you have the authorized right to send them a letter from SOL telling them that the debt is no longer legally collectible.
