Isotretinoin and retinoids: why choose a natural alternative

Current trends in the health industry are moving in the direction of natural products. Of course there are always exceptions, but it is well known that they only test rules. This is the correct way of doing things and should be followed by other spheres of our life: for example, many people still love unnatural beauty in fashion magazine models. One should look for natural options, because it is the only way to survive in this world of cement and exhaust gases.

Perhaps this introduction is too pathetic but nevertheless it is not entirely correct when we fill our lives with everything synthetic. This is not only not entirely correct, but it can also be dangerous, and that is the case with some preparations that we use from time to time.

Surely isotretinoin can best illustrate this thought. Sometimes after reading information about this drug it seems so horrible that maybe it can be used to scare small children. The thing is that isotretinoin is a very strong drug and has many severe side effects, among which there is even a danger of disturbances in the development of a future child, if the preparation is taken during pregnancy.

Of course, all this is true and isotretinoin is really a type of preparation that is used in extreme cases (such as advanced stages of acne disease) and has a number of dangerous side effects. Isotretinoin, of course, is not (and is not) as safe to use as other preparations, especially natural ones. But medical practice has shown that not everything is so horrible indeed.

Of course, the most negative feature of isotretinoin is its prohibition during pregnancy. That is why it is very important for women to take a pregnancy test before taking isotretinoin and to use birth control while taking isotretinoin.

Retinoids are also known among the most widespread and widely used products for the treatment of acne. Unlike, for example, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, these are preparations developed relatively recently. Retinoids are synthetic analogues of retinol (vitamin A), so their use with this vitamin (also including carotene, which is converted to retinol in the human body) is not recommended, for fear of hypervitaminosis.

From this point we will start with the negative sides of retinoids. Natural acne treatment, as is widely known, is always much safer and retinoids are never associated with this type of treatment, being, as mentioned above, chemically synthesized products. In addition to everything, retinoids also have some side effects and contraindications, so it is necessary to be careful in the use of these preparations, especially as strong as, for example, isotretinoin. So what side effects can retinoids cause?

Here it should be mentioned that retinoids are divided into two groups: retinoids for oral use and retinoids for use on the skin (external use). So the most common side effect with those retinoids, which are taken by mouth, is dryness and irritation of the skin, sometimes severe peeling and a feeling of itching and warmth. Therefore, non-oily moisturizing preparations must sometimes be used to maintain normal skin condition when using retinoids. And if strong and persistent itching or scaling occurs, it is better to stop using retinoids. In addition, retinoids improve the sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet rays, so sunbathing is not allowed when applying them.

More serious side effects are found with other retinoids that are taken by mouth. These can include even severe frustrations of the nervous system, abnormalities in the development of the fetus if taken by pregnant women, defects of bones and joints, etc. That is why oral retinoids are not sold without a prescription.
