Mystery Shopping 101 – Getting Started

Have you ever thought of working as Mysterious buyer? The following tutorial will provide you with the necessary information and links to start your own business as an independent buyer. I have been working as a mystery shopper and trader for just over 12 years.

You can work the system as a job… registering with companies, establishing a route and schedule… which will reward you with a good income. Working three days a week for several years, I averaged 25,000-30,000 a year in cash or items.

Understand that it takes time to settle down. Once you’ve worked your way through the various recruiters’ rotations, you’ll have more job offers than you care to handle! A word of caution about saying no…if the company needs the job completed and you decline the assignment…they will find another buyer in your area. From that point on, you are now competing for tasks. Consider accepting the assignment and asking someone to help you with it instead of turning down the job.

Starting:

This is a great link to all the major mystery shopping companies and merchandising jobs.

Starting point… VOLITION.COM

On this page, click get paid in the left sidebar: this will open links that offer work.

Click on Get paid to buy in the center of the page

On this page, you can sign up to receive your email… I suggest you sign up with a new email account so that you are not overloaded with emails on your regular account. Maybe set up a new Gmail account? You can of course use your regular email. I signed up with a new email and then when I started working for a company I just changed my email to the one connected to my PayPal to make payments easier.

Under the yellow box… there is a list…

List of Mystery Shopping Companies… AG, HP, QZ

Names starting with: AG ~ hp ~ Q Z

On each page there are a dozen companies. Each requires its own application. Start with the first one and look at the types of stores and the places they shop. If it’s something you think you might be interested in doing, sign up with them.

Most will ask for a sample of your writing. They’re just looking for a recent experience similar to the example at the end of this article. You SHOULD type in a word processor and simply copy/paste as needed. Otherwise you will end up writing a lot!

It takes about 3 months to get to work and rotation. Remember that there are two types of work…

mystery shop – is undercover (usually) and spends his own money to be reimbursed at a later date. (Ideal for dining out, hotels, golf, etc.)

commercialization – they send you to a shop to install, clean, reset, etc… no money from you… paid for your time and effort. They are usually seasonal or for a certain time (12 weekly visits, twice a month)… continuous work that you can schedule on your own so that you can schedule a day of work in various places. Once you enter a store, you will need to register in the supplier book. While you’re in the book, look to see what other companies are sending people and apply to them! I picked up more work this way!

Some points…

1. NEVER pay to enroll or certify!!!!

2. Watch for deadlines or restrictions on how often you can shop.

3. Take photos on your phone when things go wrong so you can prove your negative statements.

Narrative example:

Reservations were made with Anna on 9/8/12 at 9:10am. This was professionally processed. I was told to have a “beautiful day” when our interaction was complete. I was not asked for my email address and therefore did not receive a written confirmation of my reservation.

Tiffany greeted us as we approached the hostess’s desk. She confirmed our party number and asked if we preferred a table or a booth. Once we were seated, she placed the menus on the table and advised us that Rozz would be with us shortly.

Rozz was at the table within 30 seconds and greeted us warmly. He asked if we were having a good day and if we wanted coffee as he had a brand new coffee maker. We ordered juice and coffee. Rozz went on to explain the buffet options and commented that he could cook our eggs anyway we wanted them cooked. Once we completed our order, he invited us to head over to the buffet when we were ready and commented that he would get back to us in a few minutes.

The buffet was a plethora of options. Pastries, fruit, bread, as well as a complete selection of hot dishes for breakfast. The food was presented in a logical order and was clearly marked. Items were quickly replaced by staff.

Rozz placed our check on the table at the first check. He refilled our coffee cups several times. Every visit included casual banter. She was observed interacting with other guests at her own tables. Several guests were called by her name.

They thanked us and told us to have a great day. As we were leaving the restaurant, Tiffany called out, “Goodbye. Have a nice day.”

Doris was on duty in the janitor’s lounge. She greeted us when we entered, but she didn’t offer any explanation about the offerings or the process of serving ourselves. Doris was clearing several tables and continued to clean up around the room during our visit. The main hot dish was scrambled eggs with a wide variety of ingredients. Muffins, bread, bagels and fresh sliced fruit were also on the counter. Various types of juices were on display, as well as coffee and hot water for tea. There were five choices of types of teas. Honey, sugar and sweeteners were available.

They thanked us when we were leaving.

Additional notes:

1. Elise processed the registration with a cheerful, outgoing, and optimistic attitude. She walked around the counter and escorted me about halfway to the elevators. I was told that she was on duty until 11:30pm if I needed anything to call her.

2. DeeDee answered my support call in the morning. The hair dryer didn’t work and I called the desk to ask for another one. He indicated that she would report it to maintenance and that they would be present when they could. No one came within the hour before I had to leave.

3. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the restaurant with Danielle as our server. She was entertaining and a pleasure to interact with as she met all of our dining needs. She is attentive to detail and seems to enjoy interacting with guests.

4. Diane was on duty in the custodial lounge overnight. She chatted with each guest and walked around the room to make everyone feel comfortable. Several of the guests were greeted by her name.
