The Porsche 911 is arguably one of the most iconic cars in history. Its silhouette has remained unchanged since it was first unveiled in 1963 at the Frankfurt motor show. It takes just nine assembly steps to construct the 911 bodyshell in the new plant in Zuffenhausen. Anyone who ever built a model car will understand the basic idea: individual sections of the body are joined together by robots in different ways. First the front wheel arches and centre of the floor pan are joined to the chassis. Then the door sills, and finally the rear part of the body shell are added.

For instance, the unique single radiator in the centre of the body is surrounded by air flaps and vents that guide cool air into the radiator. There are also many other cutouts, winglets and vents to reduce drag, enhance cooling or provide downforce.

In order to connect the various body components in the best possible way, the designers at Porsche have developed a variety of connection technologies. These include bonding, clinching and screw connections using special countersunk head bolts. The latter have a special feature: a friction welding process is used to link the steel bolt with the aluminium component. This results in a particularly strong joint with extremely low noise emissions. As a result, the body of the 911 is an incredibly efficient and durable structure. It is able to withstand even the most extreme driving conditions without any loss of performance or quality. To maintain this high level of durability, the components are subjected to numerous tests and extensive inspections in a specially equipped test lab. The test lab is operated by the prestigious independent testing institute TÜV Süd. The laboratory is capable of conducting both static and dynamic testing on vehicles.
