What makes a good writer

A good writer is one who is given a gift of ideas that is capable of composing in such a way that the words are attractive to the reader. A good writer with a genuine gift for writing avoids superfluous detail and unnecessary description. Situations change in his writing at the moment when readers feel they must; therefore, variety is always an essential characteristic of all good works.

Personally, I became a huge fan of JK Rowling for the sole reason that her books offer a rich imagination with which she doesn’t let her readers get bored at all. That was exactly the comment from my students in the O’Level class that strongly suggested that I go read Harry Potter. On the contrary, as rich or impressive as the language of Judith McNaught’s novels is, their lengthy descriptions and wholly unnecessary details are exasperating. Despite forcing you to continue with the story, you feel like dropping your weapons on every page.

Next, a good writer will certainly make the opening of your article or book eye-catching enough. Personally, I admire those who successfully capture the minds of their readers with eye-catching openings and whose writing has some sort of revelation in every line. Or at least they present existing information in a way that seems fresh.

Having honed their natural talent for writing, when a good writer dwells on any topic, they present well-researched content along with their own original thinking. A good writer, therefore, is sincere and hard-working. As for depth or wisdom, he comes through extensive reading, keen observation, and going through a life plagued with hardship. Overcoming a multitude of problems can only give you an insight into the human psyche, a deeper understanding of problems, and wise solutions to them. There is no other possible source on earth!

A good writer should also incorporate a glimmer of humor in their text, as it adds a nice spark to the writing. Quoting Chuck:
“Genuine humor points out the weaknesses of humanity, but without contempt. It is a commentator on life, not a critic of it. Its purpose is to lift, not tear down, and lighten the burdens of others, not add to them. Good humor it doesn’t belittle or promote stereotypes, because it springs from the heart, not the mind. It’s a buffer that helps us get through life’s potholes. Whoever has a good sense of humor, has a good sense of life.”

Furthermore, a good writer must be fully aware of contemporary needs, and the main demand today is to communicate information and knowledge in clear and easy-to-understand language.

In short, although there can be no set formula for saying what exactly makes someone a good writer; however, a rich linguistic sense and dedicated efforts to learn a language to its fullest potential are the two fundamentals that will help you stand out among writers. To stand out, that is to say, to be a good writer, you will have to watch the successful works of others with a watchful eye and learn and develop techniques that can help you capture the interest of your readers. The list of such techniques is long; however, some of the most important are: a striking openness, variety, a good sense of humor, depth and wisdom, offering solutions to problems, an optimistic approach, and easy-to-understand language.
