Mobile VoIP: the technological revolution to change the world

When we discuss about the technological revolution, Mobile VoIP can be a hot topic to discuss. It is a business issue or a debate about its use or implementation.

What does VoIP mean? Know?

The technology mentioned above that is turning a mobile phone into a standard SIP client requires that the mobile phone support IP communications at least with the minimum possible capacity. In this application or technology, SIP can be used over any broadband IP-capable wireless network connection, such as EVDO rev A, 3G, Wi-Fi, or WiMAX.

In another technology, a soft switch-like gateway is used to connect SIP and RTP to the SS7 (Signaling System No. 7) infrastructure of the mobile network. Here, it can be controlled by a SIP application server that can provide you with advanced SIP-based services.

However, during a communication exchange, the voice signal is converted into data packets and travels over the Internet through a VoIP platform. It is then converted back to voice at the receiving end.

How has mobile VoIP brought a technological revolution?

1) At first, VoIP technology was confined to landlines and PCs only. But now, the technology is also compatible with mobile phones. What kind of features does a VoIP phone have? You can use this phone for regular audio based calls but it also has three way calling, text messaging and contact list facilities or features. Some VoIP services also have webcam capabilities. Please note that sometimes the figures provided based on these statistics can differ considerably as VoIP has different aspects. But one fact is clear and obvious. The VoIP market is growing faster and faster around the world in terms of subscribers, revenue and traffic.

Let’s go back to 2008. The global market for VoIP services grew 33% in 2008 to $30.8 billion (according to some experts). IP network services grew throughout the year. Traditional phone companies opposed VoIP because they feared losing revenue. However, the VoIP business was continuously growing. The success of the industry is influenced by the decision of the US Federal Communications Commission not to control or limit voice traffic on the Net, and also by the low price of these services.

In another report, a research center mentioned that US homeowners were replacing their landlines with VoIP and it was increasing by the day. In 2007 and 2008, the traditional or home telephony market share decreased from 90% to 74% and the industry experienced a further 23% drop over the next five years.

In Europe, the scenario is the same. About a quarter of households have replaced their landline subscriptions with mobile phones and VOIP. The percentages in Finland (61%), Portugal (48%) and Eastern Europe (39%) are proof of the mobile VoIP revolution.

VoIP is also becoming increasingly popular in other European countries. The number of VOIP users is remarkably high in Latvia (58%), Lithuania (51%), Czech Republic (50%), Poland (49%) and Bulgaria (46%).
