Volleyball Tactics – How to Position Players

In all sports, the correct positioning of the players is usually the key to winning or losing: soccer, baseball, American football or volleyball. Properly putting the right force to use is very important in today’s games surviving with strategy. What is the strength of a certain player? What is the ideal position for him or her? The answers to these questions decide the entire strategy of games like volleyball, where player positions are extremely important.

Let us now look at some of the tips on how to decide player positions on a volleyball court.

o Ideally, tall players stay in front. They will stay close to the net, they will receive the ball well and they will finish it to the opposite field. It’s easier for taller people to hit the ball better on the ground.

o Building a strong line of defense and offense is equally important. You need both strategically placed attackers and blockers.

o Setters are the backbone of the offense. They will be positioned so that they can receive the ball well and place it strategically within their court for a player to receive it and send it to the other side of the net. If the setter places the ball correctly on the right person, the receiver can aim the ball well while sending it to the opposite field.

o Liberos will be positioned in such a way that they can attack the ball immediately after it is served.

o Batters are positioned in the center of the field or along the edges. When set by the setter, hitters reach the ball quickly and hit it across the pitch. Hitters can also be good attackers.

Next is training. So you know who goes where, but now you have to decide how those positions are placed on the court. One of the popular arrangements is the six two formation where six attackers are positioned in the middle of the court and close to the net. Of those, two would work as setters and the other four as single hitters. You can also have a five one formation where only one setter is set and the rest play attackers. This formation can be changed over the course of a game based on the result. A game of volleyball is extremely dynamic and one will have to think on their feet to be successful in this game. Remember to keep your position and perform your task is equally important in this game.

Once positions and formations are decided, that needs to be clearly conveyed to the team, as confusion often leads to wasted time and poor play. It is also important for the team captain to keep an eye on the players and whether they are staying in their correct positions or not. It will also be the captain’s duty to communicate with the coach or manager and then with team members about changes in strategy and positions during the course of the game. With the position of captain comes power, and as they say, with power comes responsibility.
